Medora sits in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands—an 1883 frontier town founded by a French nobleman that became Theodore Roosevelt's ranching base and now provides one of the most dramatically situated historic townscapes in the American West. The North Dakota Film Commission promotes Medora for its combination of intact frontier architecture and the Badlands landscape that surrounds it on three sides: painted canyon walls, butte formations, and the Little Missouri River creating a visual environment of extreme geological drama. The Chateau de Morès—the Marquis de Morès's 1883 frontier home—and the Rough Riders Hotel provide period interior options, while the surrounding Theodore Roosevelt National Park offers controlled access to the untrammeled Badlands.
