Shelby's downtown square is a textbook example of what production designers mean when they say 'authentic Southern Americana'—a intact 1890s–1940s commercial district anchored by the Cleveland County Courthouse, with brick-paved sidewalks, original cast-iron storefronts, and a human scale that hasn't been disrupted by chain retail. The North Carolina Film Office and Cleveland County Film Commission jointly promote the district as a filming destination, with a local liaison trained to facilitate productions.
