Harlan County is coal country—and everything in the town of Harlan reads that way. The downtown sits in a narrow valley between steep ridges, its commercial blocks a study in Appalachian economic history: ornate 1910s bank buildings from the boom years standing next to Depression-era storefronts and postwar utility architecture. The Kentucky Film Office promotes Harlan for its authentic deep-Appalachia character, most famously realized in FX's Justified, which used the area extensively for establishing shots and location scenes. The surrounding mountains—roadside cliffs, holler roads, abandoned mine infrastructure—are available through the same permitting process, making Harlan a one-stop destination for productions needing immersive Appalachian atmosphere.
