“America's oldest state fair (est. 1818) — classic Maine fairground with grandstand, livestock barns, oxen pulling events, midway, and the forested Kennebec River valley of central Maine”
About
The Skowhegan State Fair is the oldest continuously operating state fair in the United States, established in 1818. The fairground in central Maine carries over two centuries of agricultural heritage — the oxen pull is a signature event unlike anything in American fairground culture. The campus includes the grandstand, livestock barns, exhibition buildings, and midway on the Kennebec River's north bank in the heart of Maine's working-class interior. Skowhegan itself is an authentic Maine mill town, not a tourist destination — the streets, architecture, and population read as real. For period productions set in rural New England, the combination of the oldest state fair tradition, authentic architecture, and the forested Kennebec Valley is unmatched. Maine's film office is active and supports location shoots.
