“100-acre Birmingham fairground — grandstand, exhibition buildings, livestock barns, midway, and the industrial-meets-Southern landscape of Jefferson County at the edge of the Appalachian foothills”
About
The Alabama State Fair in Birmingham sits in the industrial west side of the city — a neighborhood defined by steel mills, historic worker housing, and the red clay of the Appalachian foothills. The 100-acre fairground includes grandstand, livestock barns, exhibition halls, and midway. Birmingham's industrial heritage is one of the most visually distinctive in the American South: Vulcan (the world's largest cast iron statue) looms on the ridge above, and the steel and iron infrastructure of Jones Valley surrounds the western approach. Alabama's film incentive program offers up to 35% rebates. The fairground's combination of Southern agricultural character and Birmingham's industrial-urban backdrop creates a location range that Southern-set productions find hard to replicate on a backlot.
