“Dramatic vermilion and white sandstone cliffs dropping into Arizona. The Wave, White Pocket, Coyote Buttes — surreal eroded formations found nowhere else on earth. Otherworldly texture at every angle.”
About This Location
The Vermilion Cliffs National Monument along the Utah-Arizona border contains some of the most otherworldly rock formations on the planet. White Pocket delivers swirling, brain-like Navajo sandstone surfaces in red, white, and pink — formations that look digitally rendered but are entirely natural. The Wave, located in the Coyote Buttes North permit area, requires a separate lottery system in addition to any commercial film permit. For most productions, White Pocket and the surrounding BLM plateau offer equally surreal visuals with easier access. Managed by the BLM Arizona Strip Field Office. Commercial filming requires a BLM Special Recreation Permit. Sand roads require 4WD with high clearance and airing-down capability. Absolutely no generators allowed in sensitive formation areas. A bucket-list location for cinematographers — pure texture, color, and geology.
