About

Mojave Trails National Monument in eastern California encompasses one of the most visually diverse stretches of the Mojave Desert — Historic Route 66 ghost towns, volcanic cinder cones, sweeping sand dune fields, and Joshua tree flats. For indie filmmakers, it's a treasure chest of Americana and post-apocalyptic imagery. The preserved Route 66 corridor features abandoned motels, crumbling gas stations, and old neon signage within the monument's protection zone. Managed by BLM's Palm Springs-South Coast Field Office, commercial filming requires a Special Recreation Permit. Interstate 40 provides excellent crew access. The monument sees relatively light visitor traffic compared to Joshua Tree or Death Valley, allowing for cleaner location control. Varied terrain means a single production day can capture multiple distinct environments. Allow 10–30 business days for permit processing. Summer temperatures are extreme — plan shoots for fall through spring.
