Visual character

California's largest native grassland: sweeping tawny plains, the San Andreas Fault visible from the air, wildflower superbloom potential, and a striking inland sea of alkali. Vast and underused.

About

Carrizo Plain National Monument is California's best-kept secret for sweeping landscape cinematography. This enclosed inland valley — the state's largest native grassland — offers unobstructed panoramas of tawny plains framed by the Temblor and Caliente mountain ranges. The San Andreas Fault runs visibly along the valley floor, creating dramatic ridgelines and offset stream channels. During wet years, February through April brings wildflower superbloom events that turn the plain orange, purple, and gold — some of the most breathtaking natural color events in North America. Soda Lake is a natural alkali flat that reflects the sky in wet season. Managed primarily by the BLM Bakersfield Field Office. Commercial filming requires a Special Recreation Permit. Dirt roads become impassable when wet — film September through April in dry years. Very low visitor traffic makes crew access and control easy.
