Golden Gate National Recreation Area is the most visited unit of the entire National Park Service, encompassing over 80,000 acres of parkland wrapping around San Francisco Bay — from Ocean Beach and the Marin Headlands to Alcatraz Island, Crissy Field, Muir Beach, and Stinson Beach. For indie filmmakers based in or near San Francisco, GGNRA is an extraordinary resource: a single NPS permit covers access to battery ruins at Marin Headlands, the Presidio's military buildings, Alcatraz (with separate coordination), Muir Woods' old-growth redwood forest, and sweeping Golden Gate Bridge views from multiple angles. The urban setting means production infrastructure is immediately adjacent. Commercial filming requires a GGNRA permit with well-documented site-specific requirements. High visitor traffic at signature spots means many productions target dawn and dusk windows for exclusivity. One of the best-supported NPS filming jurisdictions in the country.
