Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in the Arizona-Utah border region encompasses one of the most visually complex landscapes managed by the NPS — the flooded canyon arms of Lake Powell weaving through sandstone cliffs, the iconic Horseshoe Bend where the Colorado River curves 270 degrees, and Rainbow Bridge, one of the world's largest natural bridges. Waterskiing, houseboats, and desert canyon coexist in a landscape defined by the contrast of blue water against brick-red stone. For indie filmmakers, the variation of accessible terrain is remarkable: from Horseshoe Bend's clifftop panorama to Lake Powell's isolated canyon arms reachable only by boat. The NPS Special Use Permit process for Glen Canyon requires up to 45 business days. Water-based production requires boat permits. Houseboats can be rented and serve as on-water production bases.
