โNatural mineral springs, freshwater streams, and Arbuckle Mountain woodland in southern Oklahoma โ an oasis of cool water and hardwood forest in the rolling Great Plains. Deceptively lush and cinematically Southern.โ
About This Location
Chickasaw National Recreation Area in south-central Oklahoma is a surprisingly lush and visually distinctive NPS unit centered on natural mineral and freshwater springs in the Arbuckle Mountains โ a geologic oddity of ancient Precambrian rock rising from the surrounding Great Plains. Cold, crystal-clear Travertine Creek flows from multiple springs through limestone and hardwood forest to merge with Veterans Lake. The natural bromide and sulfur springs produce visually interesting mineral formations and misty creek environments. For indie filmmakers based in Oklahoma or Texas, Chickasaw NRA offers a woodland spring aesthetic unlike anything else in the southern Great Plains. The well-developed recreation area infrastructure means easier crew access and logistics than many more remote NPS units. NPS commercial filming permits required; contact the park at 580-622-7234. Oklahoma City (90 miles north) and Dallas (180 miles south) both provide viable production hubs. A charming underdog location for Southern Gothic and Great Plains pastoral productions.
