About
Haines sits at the northern end of the Lynn Canal fjord, where the Chilkat Mountains rise 5,000 feet directly behind a small town of Victorian frame buildings and the Fort William H. Seward National Historic Landmark—a complete early 20th-century Army post with original barracks, officers' quarters, and parade ground intact. The Alaska Film Office promotes Haines for its combination of dramatic fjord landscape, authentic Alaskan small-town character, and the logistical advantage of road access in a state where most coastal communities require float plane or ferry. The Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve—the world's largest concentration of bald eagles—is within 15 miles. The historic fort provides interior and exterior period military options, while the surrounding peaks and water create natural drama on a geological scale.
