About

Butte's Uptown Historic District is the largest National Historic Landmark District in the United States—nearly 6,000 contributing properties spanning Victorian mansions, Romanesque Revival civic buildings, and industrial-era storefronts frozen in time on the Continental Divide. The Montana Film Office actively promotes this district as a premier filming destination, and productions have responded: Paramount's 1923 starring Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren transformed the Uptown area and Civic Center into early 20th-century Montana. The district's extraordinary density of preserved architecture offers productions the rare ability to shoot multiple 'looks' within a single block radius—grand mansion exteriors, working-class row houses, ornate saloon facades, and stark industrial infrastructure all coexist within walking distance.
