Visual character
“Massive glass-and-steel convention complex on Manhattan's Hudson Yards waterfront — 3.3M sq ft, crystalline space-frame roof, Hudson River views, and a recently expanded rooftop with wildflower habitat visible from the High Line”
About
The Javits Center is the defining convention complex of the Northeast — a 3.3 million square foot glass space-frame structure on Manhattan's Hudson Yards waterfront. The original 1986 I.M. Pei & Partners design was expanded in 2021 with a crystalline addition that includes a green rooftop habitat. The main halls are cathedral-scale, flooded with diffuse natural light through the glass and steel space frame. The Hudson River and New Jersey Palisades are visible through the west facade. Manhattan's production ecosystem is the deepest in the world, and New York's 30% Empire State Film Production Credit applies. The Javits is well-versed in film productions — it has appeared in numerous features and TV series over the years. For films requiring a contemporary, architecturally ambitious American interior of enormous scale, the Javits is the standard.
