Ocracoke Lighthouse is the oldest operating lighthouse in North Carolina (1823) and sits at the heart of one of the East Coast's most authentically preserved fishing villages. Ocracoke Island is accessible only by ferry — from Hatteras, Cedar Island, or Swan Quarter — giving productions genuine island isolation without the logistical extremity of Cape Lookout. The small white rubblestone tower, shaded by old live oaks in a quiet residential neighborhood, creates an intimate, lived-in atmosphere quite different from the dramatic coastal lighthouses. The village itself — with weathered cedar-shake cottages, working watermen's docks, and narrow lanes — provides exceptional period character for any era.
