“Small lighthouse within Fort Monroe National Monument; views of Hampton Roads' busy shipping channel; historic fort walls; Civil War and colonial history layers”
Old Point Comfort Lighthouse (1802) sits inside the remarkable Fort Monroe National Monument — America's largest stone fort, surrounded by a working moat and still largely intact after more than two centuries. The lighthouse, still active under Coast Guard authority, anchors a waterfront view of Hampton Roads' massive shipping channel, one of the busiest in the world, with aircraft carriers and container ships frequently passing close aboard. Fort Monroe itself is dense with historical significance: the site where enslaved people first achieved freedom in the Civil War, where Jefferson Davis was imprisoned, and where Edgar Allan Poe was briefly stationed. NPS manages commercial filming permits. The fort's walls, ramparts, Victorian officers' quarters, and moat create an extraordinary visual landscape well beyond the lighthouse itself. An exceptional location for historical dramas spanning American history from the colonial era through the Cold War.
