“Historic 1840s hand-operated river locks on the Muskingum River; National Historic Landmark; working 19th-century engineering; Ohio River valley cultural landscape”
About This Location
Fort Vancouver National Historic Site in Vancouver, Washington reconstructs the principal 1840s Hudson's Bay Company fur trading post—the commercial and cultural center of the entire Pacific Northwest—with stockaded fort walls, period trade store, farmhouse, kitchen, and bakehouse on a Columbia River bluff with Cascade Mountain views. The reconstructed fort complex and surrounding Kanaka Village archaeological sites create an authentic 1840s Pacific Northwest frontier trading environment ideal for Oregon Trail-era drama, fur trade documentary, and productions exploring early Pacific Northwest American and British colonial history. Both interior and exterior filming available with NPS authorization. The Columbia River setting and Pacific Northwest forest landscape extend visual storytelling possibilities. A premier Washington State film location for 19th-century Pacific Northwest storytelling. Filming permits available through Fort Vancouver NHS Superintendent. NPS Special Use Permit required; active archaeological work may limit some site areas.
