Visual character

Ancient Deerfield River gorge cutting through some of Massachusetts' most rugged terrain — virgin old-growth pine and hemlock groves, waterfalls, and one of New England's most dramatic mountain river corridors. Used historically as a Native trade route.

About

MOHAWK TRAIL STATE FOREST PRESERVES ONE OF MASSACHUSETTS' MOST RUGGED RIVER VALLEY LANDSCAPES ALONG THE COLD AND DEERFIELD RIVERS IN THE BERKSHIRE MOUNTAINS. ANCIENT HEMLOCK AND WHITE PINE GROVES — SOME OF THE LARGEST REMAINING OLD-GROWTH TREES IN THE NORTHEAST — TOWER OVER RIVER GORGES AND FORESTED SLOPES. THE TERRAIN FEELS GENUINELY WILD AND REMOTE DESPITE ROAD ACCESSIBILITY. A HISTORIC FIRE TOWER OVERLOOKS THE SURROUNDING MOUNTAIN RANGES. THE DCR PERMIT SYSTEM IS WELL-ESTABLISHED: A $45 PHOTO
