“Cornish, Stone Architecture, Unique”
About This Location
Mineral Point is unlike any other town in the American Midwest—a 19th-century lead and zinc mining community where Cornish immigrants built their homes from local dolomite limestone using techniques brought directly from Cornwall, England. The result is a small Wisconsin city that looks more like a Cotswolds village than anything else in North America. The Wisconsin Film Office promotes Mineral Point for this architectural uniqueness: stone row houses with low ceilings and deep-set windows, narrow hillside lanes, and a commercial district of stone storefronts that sit within a landscape of rounded glacial hills. Pendarvis, the state historic site that first sparked the preservation of Mineral Point's Cornish heritage, provides access to interiors that are authentically mid-19th century without significant compromise.
