California's Lost Coast: 60 miles of rugged, undeveloped Pacific coastline accessible only by foot or boat. Sea stacks, black sand beaches, old-growth forest, and crashing surf — haunting and wild.

About This Location

King Range National Conservation Area, known as California's Lost Coast, is one of the most remote and visually dramatic coastal landscapes remaining in the lower 48 states. The rugged terrain — where the King Range mountains drop sharply to the Pacific — prevented the completion of Highway 1 through this section, leaving 60 miles of coastline almost entirely undeveloped. The result is raw, primal Pacific Ocean cinematography: black sand beaches, sea stacks, crashing surf, and old-growth forest meeting the tide. For indie filmmakers, reaching the best locations requires hiking the Lost Coast Trail with gear. Helicopter support is an option for productions with logistics budget. The BLM Arcata Field Office manages commercial film permits. This is a location for committed productions seeking visuals unavailable anywhere else on the California coast — truly off the grid.
