The Palace of the Governors in Santa Fe, New Mexico is the oldest continuously occupied public building in the United States—a long adobe structure built by Spanish colonizers in 1610 that has served as government headquarters for Spanish, Mexican, Confederate, and American authorities over four centuries. The unbroken adobe portal arcade on the historic Santa Fe Plaza, where Native American artisans sell jewelry beneath the colonnaded walkway, creates an iconic visual juxtaposition of 17th-century Spanish colonial architecture and living indigenous culture.
