About
Duluth's Canal Park district combines Lake Superior's oceanic scale with genuine Great Lakes port industrial history in a way that produces images unlike anywhere else in the Midwest. The 1905 Aerial Lift Bridge—one of the few remaining such structures in the world—frames the ship canal with Victorian engineering drama, while the surrounding warehouse district's massive brick exteriors document a century of ore and grain commerce. Minnesota Film & TV promotes Duluth for its dramatic natural setting: frigid winters capable of producing authentic polar-environment sequences, dramatic summer storms, and a deep-water port still actively used by 1,000-foot ore carriers. The lift bridge alone has become an iconic visual shorthand for the northern Great Lakes region.
