“The natural mountain gap through which 300,000 settlers crossed the Appalachians in the late 1700s — Wilderness Road history, dramatic ridge views, pioneer fort reconstruction, and the Gap itself creating a genuinely historic American landscape portal.”
About This Location
Fort Smith National Historic Site in Fort Smith, Arkansas preserves the original frontier federal courthouse of Judge Isaac Parker—the infamous "Hanging Judge"—including his intact Victorian courtroom, the reconstructed gallows where 79 men were executed, and 1838 frontier military barracks on the Arkansas River. The authentic federal courtroom interior, outdoor gallows reconstruction, and river setting create visually compelling environments for Wild West justice narratives, frontier documentary, and period drama exploring the lawless Indian Territory era. Both interior courtroom and exterior grounds available for filming with NPS authorization. The combination of genuine judicial history, frontier military architecture, and dramatic river setting makes this a unique Arkansas film location. Perfect for Gilded Age justice narratives and Indian Territory-era Western productions. Filming permits available through Fort Smith NHS Superintendent. NPS Special Use Permit required for all commercial filming.
