About
Virginia City is the authentic article—a Comstock Lode boomtown that produced more silver than anywhere in American history and left behind a National Historic Landmark district of saloons, opera houses, and Victorian hotels that still stands on the steep flanks of Mount Davidson. The Nevada Film Office promotes Virginia City as a premier western filming destination, and the town delivers: original 1860s–1880s commercial architecture on a main street that drops dramatically through a canyon, with mine headframes still visible on the hillsides above. Bonanza was filmed in the surrounding area for 14 seasons. The wooden boardwalks, original newspaper offices, and underground mine infrastructure accessible through local operators give productions authentic period depth unavailable in recreated western sets.
