“Largest lake in Illinois; flat agricultural Lake Clinton adjacent; spillway and dam; classic Midwestern farming landscape meets large water body; I-64 accessible”
Carlyle Lake is the largest lake entirely within Illinois — a 26,000-acre Corps of Engineers reservoir on the Kaskaskia River in southern Illinois farm country. The Louisville District manages commercial filming permits. The surrounding landscape is flat, agricultural, and uncompromisingly Midwestern: grain elevator silhouettes, tractor lanes disappearing into corn fields, and the enormous inland sea of Carlyle Lake appearing almost impossibly large amid the flat horizon. Carlyle Lake sits along a major waterfowl migration flyway, and the fall migration brings extraordinary concentrations of ducks, geese, and pelicans that create exceptional wildlife B-roll. The dam and spillway provide architectural drama. The authentic agricultural Midwest landscape surrounding the lake is difficult to find in productions made closer to major urban markets. Strong for Midwestern family dramas, agricultural documentaries, waterfowl hunting content, and productions needing a genuinely flat, open, American heartland aesthetic.
