About this location

Portland Breakwater Light — nicknamed 'Bug Light' for its diminutive size — is an exquisite Victorian cast-iron lighthouse at the end of a breakwater walk in South Portland, with Portland Harbor spread before it and Portland Head Light visible in the distance. The octagonal cast-iron tower, modeled after an ancient Greek monument, is architecturally unique among American lighthouses. Restored in 2002, the structure is pristine and photogenic at any angle. The breakwater walkway creates natural leading-line compositions toward the lighthouse with open water on both sides. Portland Harbor's working waterfront — lobster boats, ferries, tankers — provides authentic maritime B-roll. South Portland's industrial waterfront adds gritty character contrast to the elegant lighthouse. The Maine Film Office provides statewide production support. Near Portland's restaurants, hotels, and the creative community that makes Maine one of the Northeast's most film-friendly states.
