“The Green and Yampa Rivers carve canyons through tilted rock strata in northwestern Colorado — in-situ dinosaur fossils, canyon whitewater, and colorful badland terrain. Rare combo of paleontology and river aesthetics.”
Dinosaur National Monument straddles the Colorado-Utah border at the junction of the Green and Yampa Rivers, offering a rare combination of extraordinary paleontology and dramatic river canyon cinematography. The famous Carnegie Quarry wall — containing over 1,500 bones of 11 dinosaur species embedded in tilted sandstone — is encased in the Quarry Exhibit Hall. The monument's canyon country, carved by the Green and Yampa Rivers, ranges from Echo Park's stunning river confluence to Harpers Corner's panoramic ridgeline overlooks. Colorful badland formations in the Uinta Basin portion add warm-toned geological drama. NPS commercial filming permits are required; for river sections, rafting permits are also needed. Contact the park at 435-781-7700. Vernal, Utah is the nearest production services hub. A uniquely dual-purpose location for productions combining prehistoric science themes with Southwest river canyon aesthetics.
