About this location

Amistad National Recreation Area encompasses Amistad Reservoir at the confluence of the Rio Grande, Pecos River, and Devils River in the Texas-Mexico borderlands. Turquoise desert water surrounded by Chihuahuan Desert canyon country creates a visual contrast of startling clarity. The lower Pecos River and Devils River canyons contain some of North America's most significant pre-Columbian pictograph sites โ€” ancient cave paintings dating back over 4,000 years, visible from watercraft near the canyon walls. The international border runs through the middle of the lake, adding geopolitical visual context. For indie filmmakers, Amistad offers genuine borderland isolation aesthetics, desert canyon lake visuals, and extraordinary archaeological backdrop in one location. NPS commercial filming permits required at 830-775-7491. Del Rio (a small border city) provides basic production services. A deeply cinematic location for border narratives, archaeological stories, and West Texas isolation films.
