“Multicolored sandstone cliffs rising 50-200 feet from Lake Superior — mineral staining creates natural painterly bands of red, orange, green, and purple in the cliff faces. The clearest freshwater in the world reflects the cliffs in an extraordinary dual landscape.”
Castillo de San Marcos National Monument in St. Augustine, Florida is the oldest masonry fortification in the continental United States—a 1672 Spanish colonial coquina stone star fort guarding the Matanzas Bay with dramatic water bastions, a tidal moat, and sweeping bay views. The distinctive coquina shellstone construction, drawbridge, cannon terreplein, and symmetrical star-shaped plan create a visually extraordinary historic architecture environment unlike any other in America. Both interior casemates and extensive exterior fortification grounds available for filming with NPS authorization. The surrounding St. Augustine bay, oldest European-settled city backdrop, and coastal Florida landscape extend the visual palette. Perfect for Spanish colonial period productions, pirate-era narratives, and any film requiring authentic 17th-century Atlantic World military architecture. A premier Florida film location. Filming permits available through Castillo de San Marcos NM Superintendent. NPS Special Use Permit required for commercial filming.
