Georgia Film Locations:
Where Hollywood Meets Your Production

Georgia has become the most quietly dominant film state in the country. Between Savannah's perfectly preserved antebellum streetscapes, the Appalachian foothills to the north, miles of rural farmland in between, and Atlanta's rapidly expanding studio infrastructure, Georgia can double for a startling range of times and places. Generous tax incentives sealed the deal: the state is now second only to California for total production volume, and the talent pool has grown to match.

Spanish moss hanging from live oaks in Forsyth Park at dusk. Cobblestone streets in the factor's walk district, iron railings green with age. Savannah is one of the few American cities where a period film requires essentially no set dressing south of the railroad.

White-water rapids cutting through Appalachian gorges too steep for roads. Hardwood canopy so dense it filters noon sun into cathedral light. The Chattooga River country is genuine wilderness thirty minutes from a paved highway — the kind of location that costs nothing and looks like a million dollars.

Red clay roads, abandoned tenant farmhouses, kudzu swallowing every wire and fence post that holds still long enough. The flat, hot, unhurried South — the version that doesn't perform itself for tourists, which is exactly what makes it work on screen.

Downtown Atlanta's canyon of glass towers and historic viaducts, its multilevel street grid doubling as a production design playground. Filming in Georgia: Common Questions

Permits, unions, and incentives — the practical side of production in Georgia.

How does Georgia's film tax credit work?

Georgia offers a 20% base transferable tax credit on all qualified Georgia expenditures, with an additional 10% for including the Georgia promotional logo in final credits. There is no cap on the credit and no minimum spend threshold (though a $500K minimum total budget is required). Credits can be sold or transferred, making them highly liquid. Apply through the Georgia Department of Economic Development's film office.

Does Savannah require film permits for street shoots?

Yes. The City of Savannah issues film permits through its Office of Special Events, Film & Tourism. Most exterior shoots in the historic district require a permit, and some locations (Forsyth Park, the squares) have specific restrictions on shooting times and crew size. Savannah's film office is filmmaker-friendly and permits are generally straightforward to obtain with advance notice.

Is Georgia a union or non-union film market?

Georgia is a right-to-work state with a robust and growing union presence due to the volume of studio work (Marvel, Netflix, Amazon productions are all common). IATSE Local 479 covers below-the-line crew for most major productions. Many indie films shoot non-union or under SAG-AFTRA low-budget agreements. The local crew base has expanded dramatically over the past decade and is now world-class at both union and non-union levels.
